The Cost of Joining a Book Club ( And Why It’s Worth it)

Joining a book club post-adolescence can be a little daunting.

Supposedly, the majority of Americans don’t read at all (insert statistic from your favorite trusted source here).

But rest assured — like most things we try as adults, we tend to psych ourselves out beforehand. And then after it turns out okay.

Actually, it turns out more than okay.

We realize the return does outweigh the cost.

Just like anything worthwhile, joining a book club — and actually getting something meaningful out of it — is going to cost you.

The Cost of the Book (Typically Less Than $30)

I’m a sucker for “analog” physical copies, but I totally understand how trips to any bookstore (right now, only Barnes & Noble exists nearby) can quickly rack up to over $100 for maybe four books.

So if you’re able to get a digital copy… don’t tell me how you got it. That’s great.

Your Time Commitment

Simply put, you’re going to have to say no to other things — maybe doomscrolling for hours or whatever else — to make time to read.

It might even be more costly time-wise if you read with peak focus and take notes. I think you should.

A Cup of Coffee

Lastly, specifically for my book club: we plan on meeting in person and eventually finding the “king of all cafes” here in Montgomery County, Maryland.

I’ll update this when I finally decide which coffee shop takes the crown. But honestly, the in-person aspect is already one of my favorite parts.

Why Joining a Book Club is Worth It

Well, generally, socializing is nice — and maybe you’ll meet some new people. Maybe you’ll meet your future spouse at book club… who knows?

My book club is specifically focused on business and self-improvement topics.

I’m intentionally designing an environment of like-minded people, for the same reason hitting the gym with a buddy is always better: it helps propel you forward.

I like to think of our environment to be like currents, which drag us to and fro.

Think about this and be intentional with your life.

Should you go with the crowd?

Yes — just be conscious about which crowd you choose.

If you’re local, I’d like to invite you to join us. Simply RSVP on the site so I know to expect you.

Cheers, friend — I’ll be seeing you soon.
